Here's a long-shot, but if anyone would know where to find this music, I'll
bet you read this list....

I'm looking for sheet music for Bernard Herrmann's "Sleigh Ride," from his
score to the 1942 movie, "The Devil and Daniel Webster." "Sleigh Ride,"
which Herrmann wrote for solo clarinet and orchestra, would lend itself
beautifully to an arrangement for clarinet and piano, or clarinet and string
quartet. I have no idea whether or not any arrangement exits. Neither the
song nor the title of the full score appear in the www.sneezy.org composition
database. In fact, nothing by Bernard Herrmann turned up in a search.

Herrmann won an Oscar for this score. I heard the brief "Sleigh Ride"
section of it on Telarc 80189, "Chiller," a CD of assorted creepy music by
various composers, played by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
Some of of the selections are classical music used in horror movies and TV
shows, while other pieces were scored especially for movies and TV. The CD
features several nifty clarinet solos. I don't know who plays them. Since
Herrmann's "Sleigh Ride," as the Cincinnati Pops plays it for this CD, is
only 1:51 long, my guess is that if anyone has ever arranged it as a solo
clarinet piece, it's most likely buried in some book of miscellaneous
selections (maybe Halloween music, movie music, etc.) It's a delightfully
creepified version of a folk tune, "McLeod's Reel," which (as the liner notes
point out) Aaron Copland also uses, in "Rodeo." Herrmann slithers the tune
around in minor keys, to humorous effect. It sounds like fun to play. It
would make a great introduction to the clarinet for small kids.
