I know the passage in the Eric Brand text you mentioned. It is not "gentle
heat" but the use of a torch-heated iron to soften the surface of the
mouthpiece. I would say, scientifically (j/k), blisteringly hot!!!!

However, it's my guess too, that the mouthpiece has warped.
