This discussion on basset horns is interesting because of the comments =
that the PSO is getting rid of the smaller bore Selmers and trying the =
larger bore Buffets.

What are the fundamental differences between bore sizes in tone and =
playability?

I recently tried a Selmer alto clarinet which has a smaller bore than =
other altos. It seemed to have a strong and focussed sound, with a very =
interesting quality. However, it seemed more like a jazz instrument than =
a classical one because of that quality - it didn't seem like the type =
of tone to blend in, it sounded like Paul Desmond's alto sax. I liked it =
but I am also going to try a larger bore instrument for comparison.

The Selmer bass clarinet has a smaller bore size than the other makers, =
and Selmers seem to be preferred by most. Are they easier to play, is =
the intonation better, or what?=20

I appreciate your feedback,

Jonathan Smith
