Well, it's not that *you* misunderstood. The frustration was mine --
and it's why I over-reacted.
The difficulty is always, here, that you don't know who you're talking
to, because the audience is very diverse. (It's why, ages ago, I
complained about posts that said, you *should* do this, or that,
because you don't have feedback to know whether what you're saying is
appropriate.)
So, for *some* people, all the technical stuff is very
counterproductive. It gives the impression that solutions to basic
problems, or basic misconceptions, are to be found by finding the 'Holy
Grail', as you put it.
But for others, technical information is exactly what they need,
because they're engaged in the struggle to produce what they already
understand is necessary for them, musically.
Then, the right information about a horn/mpc/reed may make even a large
percentage difference.
The frustration lies in trying to communicate both things at once.
But I still stand by what I said: namely, that on this list we err on
the side of technocentricity.
In my opinion.
