I used the acronym ATAK, which, of course, is completely wrong!

ATRAC is the acronym ((Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding). Means lossy compression (like MP3).

BTW - settled on a Sony ECM-MS957 stereo mike for the thing. The Shure VP88 was my 1st choice, but was 4X the price. It looks like it'll be a reasonable sounding cheap mike (~$210) for my limited use.
