Your "if" is wrong.

Proof: find a piano. Find two keys an octave apart. Count the number of
keys between them. Do not forget the black ones. If your piano is not
defective, there should be 12 of them.

If you don't have a piano, use your clarinet. Play a chromatic scale, one
octave. Count the notes. Should be 12 there, too.
