Good to know.... I am actually considering buying a minidisc player because
I do a lot of work for college students. These days, many own minidisc
recorders and would like me to do editing for them. Now, I have to have
them bring the recorder over if they want me to work on their tapes.

Yes it is. It is a good quality portable (3.5"x7") stereo cassette deck
that you can plug a 1/8" microphone into.

There is a digital Sony Walkman size machine, which makes

I own one of those DAT recorders. It is the TCD-D8, TCD-D100 or TCD-M1. I
go into it digitally and use it as a backup on my gigs. As for other
portables, they all cost a lot more than the sony and you can't plug a
non-battery powered condensor microphone into it. The cheapest is made by
Tascam (DA-P1) and probably runs about $1350. It is a good machine,
overall... Has a good transport, decent Analog-Digital converters, mic
level inputs on XLR connectors (pro-balanced 3 pin connector), and a digital
I/O. All the other portables out there cost 2-3 times that. Since DAT is
no longer considered a consumer format the really cool portables out there
that you could plug a little stereo microphone into seem to have gone out of
production.
