Dear Adam,
I have had occasion to double on bass, and what I found to be true was that
the bass, at least for me, is somewhat like playing a saxophone, embouchure
and reed-wise. I had to do a lot more adjusting of my reeds to make them
responsive. If you play on the same strength as you do Bb, you will
definitely get a fuzzy sound. Now, this may take a great deal of time, but
it certainly will save you $70.00. For me personally, I had to buy two
strengths below what I play on Bb (I usually play about a 4 1/2 or a 5; 4
on Oliveri's). Then, I found I almost always had to even the rails out
quite a bit all the way up and down at least on one side. I also took quite
a bit off the tip. However, and I cannot emphasize this enough: Play the
reed after each small adjustment and really listen closely. Also, keep a
fairly relaxed embouchure; if you find yourself tightening up, go do
something else for a while.
Also, check the klarinet archives - that is a wonderful resource and you can
find the old conversation that you remember, and even more.

Here is one way of getting there:
