David,
I just bought a RZ55 against all professional advice - about $250 right now.
There's a definite difference in recoding quality between the less expensive
and more expensive models - some of the older models use an older
compression algorithm that's very noisy at low recording levels.

Good mikes are amazingly expensive - I'm looking at the used market. Used
MiniDisc's don't exist yet.
