Not to belabor this thread beyond any useful limit, but the cause of cracking
was almost certainly NOT a chemical reaction similar to stress corrosion
cracking of austenitic stainless steel in aqueous "sour" environments found
in the oil refining industry, but more likely was simply thermally induced
cracking caused by the rapid cooling of the plastic mpc as the ethanol
evaporated. The mpc most likely also had a small undetected crack, or stress
riser resulting from the original machining, prior to cleaning with ethanol.
