I don't know what all the fuss about trying to "sterilize" mouthpieces is. I
rinse mine about every week or two in plain water when it starts to show
signs of deposits and it dries looking like new. With reeds, I keep a glass
of mouthwash & water handy to soak reeds when students are trying out a new
one, or when I'm going through several to try out.
I've seen some nasty mouthpieces come in on rental instruments - apparently
some folks who rent instruments have little regard for the people they're
renting to, and that's a shame. It's offensive and embarassing when a new
student opens the case of their "new" rental instrument and there's a shiny
clarinet or saxophone with a mouthpiece that looks like it was dug up from a
garbage dump with a cast off reed thrown in. I might add, this is in
Australia and not all instrument rental outfits are so careless.
