I see this clearly when i work sectionals in hs or middle school
sections. I can get 9 out of 10 students to get a good sound within a
couple of minutes apiece. And 2 or 3 at most take that information and
use the process to tell if the adjustments are working.

One of my friends who teaches strings in public school periodically
requires his students to make a tape of their practicing. He is not
strict about the how they practice, but can check on that as well. He
eases at specific intervals when he checks the tapes so that the same
practice cannot be credited next week.
Just the fact that kids are making the tape improves amount and sometimes
the kind of practicing they do.

You get tired of the once a week supervised practice session? I do and i
keep wrking with them because i don't have as many students as i would
like (yet). And sometimes the coasters do start pedalling on their own.

Besides i was a reluctant piano student thru high school and figure i
still have some dues to pay off (grin)

Ah, integrity. And I like the students who have that trait.
