Hello, I am new to your list, very much an amateur and have a few questions
to ask of you all.

First off, I began playing clarinet at age 5, played through high school and
then promptly quit. I am now 41, with a 11 year old daughter that has been
playing clarinet for two years now. I must have a very thick skull.......I
have helped her throughout these past two years but didn't realize until
recently how much I enjoy playing myself. I guess it took some "real" music
to make me realize. My daughter and I happened to be at the music store to
purchase reeds and she noticed a chart for Titanic. We bought it and she
promptly began learning how to play the songs. In helping her with some of
melodies I decided that I really was having a good time. We proceeded to
play "Mom, its my clarinet...." for a couple of weeks. The other day my
husband came dragging my old clarinet out of a closet somewhere and I melted
in rememberance of where some of the stickers, pins etc. (on the case, not
the clarinet) came from. I took the clarinet in to the shop and they gave
it a good once over, replaced one cork and several pads. Otherwise they
deemed it healthy and playable.

Well, an orchestra member I will never be, but I do say........I have
surprised myself in how well I can play. Now for the questions, albeit some
may seem dumb to you all:

1) I am thinking about purchasing a wood clarinet. I would like to hear
some of your comparisons between plastic and wood. I have my own ideas, but
I am trying to decide whether it is worth the purchase. BTW, my daughter is
using a wood clarinet that belongs to her cousin.

2) What do you all think of the Pad Savers? Are they good to use? Is it
good to leave them in the clarinets while in the case? Can you wash them?

3) What is the best thing to use to clean/condition the outside of the
clarinet, wood and plastic?

I have been lurking for a few days and have learned a great deal about
hygiene and ligatures....thank you!

Dixie
