Ann,

relapse time gets shorter with each improvement?"

This is indeed true for students who are really serious about their
playing. This is also more likely to take place when they know how to
practice properly. If practice is not done intelligently, no change will
take place. For young people, I enlist parents as my allies; then they have
nowhere to hide when it comes to practicing and the parents can usually
listen for the really bottom line basics, such as what tunes are to be
played and what exercises, etc.
However, there have a number whom I have had to let go, because they just
don't want to have to work at anything or change anything about what they
are doing. They want a cheering section, not a teacher. I cheer when there
is a good play - not because I'm paid to.
