Just a bit more on the Wells and the Stowell-Wells-
Schneider mp Walter was asking about. I know for sure it is not a Chedeville
blank...one time when I was in Wells shop (he had several locations and this
one in particular was close to the Cathedral north of the Chicago river)
there was a Chedeville mp on his table, easily identified because of the band
of markings around the mp. Chedevilles were starting to be well known and I
mentioned that he had a mp there that had potential. Wells was very proud of
the blank they had designed and the work he did on it. He looked at the
Chedeville with distain and said he could sell it for lots of money, but "he
wasn't mad at anyone." So, while he knew what some players were using, he
certainly felt pride in his own product. There were plenty of Kaspar mps
around at that time, but really, it's only been the last decade or so that
they and the Chedevilles have become so very desired. The incident I write
about here with Wells was probably in the late 50's or early 60's and
Marcellus was still in Cleveland and not yet teaching at Northwestern...in
other words his influence was not yet stongly felt in the Chicago clarinet
world. Doug Phillips
