absolutely true! And that was reinforced for me this week during a
lesson with a student who began clarinet when he retired 15 years ago.
He has all the skills, but often doesn't have things in order and balance
so that he can play effectively. He always leaves a lesson saying,
"Thanks for putting up with me". and still gets very nervous about
playing. Even though i was slow to realize the base of the problem, i
guess he trusted me enough to say in effect," i hate my sound, it is
never what i envision." Next lesson/s will be spent finding out how he
can get the quality he wants. Made a beginning at least--he thought the
problem was that he didn't push enough air thru the horn, he is supplying
more than enough air, but little focus.

>>suppose, in a way this is good,
because I can anticipate the problems and we can work on together; I do
find
that these changes are sometimes discouraging for the student, especially
if
everything has been fairly easy going for a while.<<

and doesn't this usually reinforce those basics, and the relapse time
gets shorter with each improvement?.
