While this question is for Clark Fobes, I'm going to step in, since I know
the maker and the blank. Stowell had studied with a Belgian clarinetist and
greatly admired that teacher's sound. He copied a mouthpiece, to a degree,
that produced that sound more easily than a typical French blank. The blank
was worked on a great deal, with many changes being made. I often saw the
metal "core" that Wells had made with Stowell's imput. That core was used by
Babbitt to make a molded blank which was then corked, faced, stamped with
logo, polished...the whole bit, by Wells. So, in short it's an original,
molded blank made by Babbitt for the Stowell, Wells, Schneider company. As
time went on, there were more changes, and by the time Wells alone ran the
company the blank was longer than the earlier Stowell, Wells, Schneider
blanks.
I would imagine Babbitt still has some of the original specs on this blank.
