How do I explain to a student to "not play with a spitty tone" besides
verbally stating it? He blows a lot of saliva into his clarinet.

Just say to him to constantly "get the water out". Tell him that is sounds
like a toilet running if he doesn't get the water off of the back of the reed.
Now one more thing - make sure that his Mouthpiece is not funkified on the
inside. That would be a good reason to not want to inhale.
