You misattribute the quote to me, as I indicate by using the more
conventional form of quoting in the above, but never mind.

I just wanted to add to what you say that it's interesting to try the
effect of shortening a conventional reed by a centimetre or so, bringing
it to the length of the reeds used on classical clarinets.

As in the case of using a different ligature, this considerably affects
the sound, so you might think that period instrument players would
automatically shorten all reeds.

But again, as in the case of ligatures, the main difference is just to
affect your choice of reeds. And since it's a pain to shorten all
reeds, I just shorten the ones that feel to me as though they might
benefit, just as I might try a different ligature on a reed that I felt
had possibilities, but needed to be slightly more or less free.
