For me the flattened shoestring works better; but I don't know that it
makes a real difference. If you don't sew the one end then you must start
with an overlap. There is no set number of turns; but the more you wrap,
the tighter it gets - and there is such a thing as too tight! On the last
turn tuck the crimped end under the turn and tighten. That's really all
there is to it.

As somebody pointed out, a conventional mouthpiece cap won't fit over it.
A bass clarinet cap will work.
