Subj: Re: [kl] Why? - Teachers for adult students

I took lessons as an adult for a couple of summers and the teacher seemed to
be quite happy to work with me.

For one thing, I paid attention to her instructions and put serious effort
into the practice instead of the "I can't do it" that so many kids spout to
get out of practicing the hard stuff.

Secondly she really enjoyed having someone who cared about the "why" things
were done.

Finally, as one of her few truly advanced students, sometimes we'd just sit
back and play some challenging duets just for fun. Although I was nowhere
near her equal, I was good enough that she had the opportunity to have a
partner to play these works with so that she too could have some fun now and
then.

She didn't have to focus on upcoming contests, etc when working with an
adult amateur. Instead she could emphasize musicianship and technique.
