Wayne,
I learned saxophone on my own with a fingering chart and reading "The
Art of the Saxophone" by Larry Teal. I then listened to any recording I
could fine. The most memorable ones were Vincent Abato doing the Glaz and
Ibert and Rousseau doing those pieces.
The biggest problem for us clarinetist seems to be the altisimo palm
keys - it's very hard to have fast technique with those keys, the middle c -
mainly smooth coordination between B and C in scale passages, and the low
range - either getting them to speak at soft volumes or playing fast between
low C, C#, B, and Bb. Then there's the mind lock that we get sometimes when
looking at a high D and our first thought is the clarinet high D fingering.
Also it is a naturally louder instrument than clarinet. I usually do my
sax practice in my studio at school and do clarinet at home (apartment).
Don't get me wrong I love the sax and playing the sax.
