Wayne,

Actually both ways are good. =20
Playing loud and long will help you to:
Listen to each note your playing for tone and evenness in a scale.
Develop your embouchure so that you can control your sound better on =
loud passages, which will help you to play more musically.

Playing Softly will help you to concentrate on supporting your sound. =
Often we loose the intensity of our tone when we play soft because we =
fail to support the sound. =20

Take the best from all of your teachers, and try develop an over all =
picture of what it takes to play music musically. After the goal should =
be to produce better music, not trying to get the Principle Chair. If =
we make the production of music our goal, then that will change our =
whole approach to the practice of the mundane (scales, arpeggios, etc.). =
Otherwise we fall into the trap of trying to play faster and higher =
just to impress our friends and neighbors. Or, drive the family pet =
crazy.

Jay Webler,
Jay's Clarinet and Percussion

Subject: Re: [kl] Why?

My old teacher wanted me to play the notes as quiet as
it can be but the new one wanted me to play the notes loud and long. =
Which way is
better? I still not sure after playing the instrument for 40 years. =20
