Dear Lelia:

If you're still looking for an instructor, I'd suggest going to the
community band some evening when they practice, introduce yourself and ask
if any of the clarinet players would be willing to work with you. I feel
relatively cerain that someone would be glad to take you on as a student -
they're all there as amateurs and I think the environment being less formal
attracts more genial and down to earth individuals. I don't know how many
perspective teachers that you've approached but frankly I'm embarassed at
the thought that legit teachers would turn you down simply because you're an
adult, or have had some previous experience. I imagine some "professionals"
get too big for their britches, but that's life - and it's THEIR problem,
not yours. Don't take it personally.
Regarding the mind like a blank slate - lest we forget - slates use chalk
and can be erased and reused over and over again - in fact at my age the
eraser sometimes works faster than the chalk! I've read that "blank slate"
theory in Philosophy of Education - required for graduate work - not that it
made any difference in my teaching. In fact I took it once by correspondence
from ISU, and a second time at Purdue in the classroom and I still can't
remember who originated it!
Nuff said.

John
