My solution to the mildew problem is Alkiwipes - the alchohol 'wipes' you
can buy at a drugstore for almost nothing, and which are ordinarily used
prior to hypodermic injections, etc. A single wipe of the reeds and whatever
case you keep them in keeps them mildew free for some time, and doesn't seem
to have an adverse effect on the reeds. For those of you who teach, swabbing
e.g. a student's reed and mouthpiece prior to checking it won't sterilize
it, I'm sure, but it does confer a fair amount of protection. I always carry
some Alkiwipes in my case,

The Alcohol swabs offer a pretty high amount of protection. It of course is
not boiling, but it will kill germs quite well. I was told that by an
Infectious Disease Specialist who I taught his son Sax. I always swab
before, and after playing a student's setup. Then again, the Director of
the Univ. of Penn Medical School Hematology Dept. did not want his son
sharing the setup with anyone - even with an alcohol swab. So theres two
differing views
Gigliotti says that the repeated swabbing of the Mouthpiece will actually
change the molecular composition of the Hard Rubber, possibly turning it
into gold.

Actually, he says that it is a myth that it changes it at all. - Again,
another differing view, as many that I respect do say that it changes over
time.
