Rien,

I'm autodidact on Percussion for the most part. I did not take Clarinet =
lessons in my youth from a Clarinet teacher in my youth, but a general =
music teacher that played trumpet. According to my present teacher he =
helped me develop a very sound foundation.

On the Orchestra, or band actually, you are correct it is not the =
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It is the Gwinnett Community Band. I hope =
that I will not bore your with a quick story on how that came about.

Last June I contacted the band to ask about joining. I indicated that I =
wanted to play Clarinet. Unfortunately, I let it slip that I also =
played percussion. It turned out that they were really short on =
Percussionist and asked if I would consider filling in on Percussion =
instead of Clarinet. I said fine, but after the last concert at the =
Georgia Dome I want to begin in the Clarinet section. They graciously =
agreed. I don't think that they really believed that a drummer could =
actually play a musical Instrument.

We started rehearsals again in September. I dutifully sat in the 3rd =
Clarinet section, not wanting to be pretentious. At the second =
rehearsal I was asked to play in the Second Clarinet Section. On the =
third rehearsal I asked when I would actually audition for the band. I =
was told that there would be no audition, instead a First Clarinet =
folder was being prepared for me with all the Solo Parts.

When one the Percussionists heard that we might be getting some new =
Clarinet players he suggested to the Conductor that I could probably go =
back to the percussion. With out hesitation, the Conductor said, "Jay =
is staying right were he is!"

Which brings me to a drummer joke. What kind of people hang around =
musicians? =20

Answer: Drummers

I had to do that, It was just getting to heavy.

Jay,

from what you wrote before I understand you are an autodidact. In which
Atlanta orchestra are you playing? I guess not the Atlanta Symphony. I =
once
played with that orchestra, but the story, that goes with it will follow
afterwards, maybe in a couple of weeks.
