"Most clarinetists play saxophone". Is that true? Anyway, I do.
Studied clarinet from the 4th grade on, but picked up the sax (tenor) in
the 9th grade, because of Rock 'n Roll! I started an R and B band with
some friends, and nobody wanted a clarinet in such a group (Rock
clarinet, why not?!) We worked lots of gigs over the next four years. I
used a metal Link mouthpiece, so my sound was not legit, to say the
least. While in junior college, I joined a polka band. Pete Weiss and
the Polka Timers! We were together for over 12 years, playing every
Friday and Saturday nights. My college years as an undergrad and grad
student were spent mainly on clarinet, although I did study alto/tenor
sax with the late Frank Stokes, formerly of the LA Philharmonic. He
really fixed my legit sound, so I could perform the standard French alto
repertoire. My sound now is very a traditional, "clarinet-like" (orch!)
sound. I play on Yamaha '62s (tenor and alto), with an old Buescher
soprano, in the original coffin case. It was once owned by the great
Johnny Rotella, formerly with the Dorsey bands. No bari, unlike Claudia
and Don.

That's my 2 cents worth.
