RE: Shoestring ligature:

It's hard to argue price/performance.

I've tried a string ligature of and on since college days. Never QUITE had the nerve to use one in a concert situation. I'm always afraid I'll have to change quickly and wind up with reeds in my lap and string everywhere as the conductor cues me.

The old time guys had grooves in their mouthpiece to hold the string. Seems like a good idea if you're going to use a string ligature (bad English here, a ligature IS a string).

Maybe when I get my lathe (wait until my wife hears about THIS purchase), I'll put some string grooves on a mouthpiece and try it.
