While I don't remember the recording of the Mozart Quintet, one of my
earliest record purchases was a collection of clarinet encores - actually
arrangements by Kell - on Decca. I remember people telling me that he was
out of fashion; but that didn't stop me. I own several of those
arrangements and have used them for "light" performances. Kell began his
studies on the violin. He became a clarinettist rather late in the
process. That may explain his natural affinity for both his "singing"
style and his rubato.
