Thank you for the thoughtful post Ann. It is amazing what types of problems
a change in equipment can bring out of the woodwork. I have noticed that
whenever I have a student change reed strengths, or mouthpiece, we will
have to work twice as hard and remind ten times as much on proper posture,
breathing and embouchure. I tend to be pretty critical in the breathing
area anyway. "Bad sound is an unnecessary evil" indeed, and any change in
mouthpiece and/or reed, it's almost like the student exaggerates all of
his/her sore points when we make changes. I suppose, in a way this is good,
because I can anticipate the problems and we can work on together; I do find
that these changes are sometimes discouraging for the student, especially if
everything has been fairly easy going for a while.
