John, I think your use of the term "distorted rhythm" when speaking of
Kell's playing is true but misleading. It gives the impression that the
distortion is either haphazard or his unique style of playing. In fact,
what he was doing is better characterized as "rubato playing" which I
always felt he did magnificently. The reason why you call it
"distorted" is because badly done rubato has everyone slow down and then
everyone speed up together to achieve the sense of "robbed time" which
is what rubato is supposed to do. But Kell allowed the others to go
their own way and in absolute strict time while he alone robbed rhythm.
It is exactly the way Mozart himself described rubato in a letter to his
father. And it is very difficult to do right, which is why we hear it
done well so rarely.

Typical Kell style with distorted rhythm but a beautiful tone, technique and conviction. It was such vocal playing, all other players seemed cold and inflexible after listening to Kell
