>Bryan asked why someone would chose clarinet for an instrument to
learn.>

I never chose the clarinet. I found myself in the band room one evening
with lots of 6th graders and all our parents. There were some new shiny
cases with these black pieces of clarinet in them that had this fine
"new" smell. Somehow I wound up with one. I never even remember seeing
any other instrument.

Classical music filled our home and my mother played a beautiful tenor
recorder. I was a little surprised that the clarinet was not like the
recorder.

I liked the experience of playing in ensemble in band. Never took
lessons, didn't practice much, never got into the competition for chairs.

I decided to persue music therapy at about 15. Piano performance was too
tough, so I'd default to the clarinet for college. THEN - by some
miracle my mother drove me across Brooklyn to Don Lituchy in East
Flatbush for lessons. Don recognized something dormant in my skill and
musicality. He taught me well and - made me practice ! Thru him I was
invited to play chamber music at the Julliard prep school. I played 2hrs
a day , bought a Buffet Prestige and thrived!

Real life and jobs and all overshadowed the clarinet after college. The
importance of my clarinet is clear in my fire escape plan which was
always - "get the kid, let the pets out and grab the Buffet case".

End of chapter. - Kristin
