Some of the clarinetists in the bands I'm familiar with are not much
more advanced than beginners (having only played clarinet for a year
before laying off for (literally) decades) and the majority are at
different levels of "intermediate". What really surprised me
is how few have even heard a professional clarinetist in any context.
Richard Stoltzman is coming to KC in Feb. to play the Copland
Concerto with the KC Symphony so I arranged to get group tickets for
the clarinet section to one of the performances. When I told
the group that I had been successful in getting the tickets, I was
shocked to find that for 2/3 of them, not only will this be the first
time they have heard a professional clarinetist, it will be the first
time they have attended a symphony concert live!

I also found that most have never heard recordings of any
of the clarinet standards (e.g. K622; Brahms 1 & 2, etc....). At
least some of the section have now heard parts of the Copland
concerto because I played part of it for them one night (my current
teacher went nuts and had me work through the Concerto) - So they
have a (very) vague idea of what it sounds like (and I learned an
important lesson: never attempt the cadenza in the Copland concerto
where anyone can hear you the day after you make the jump to a
Buffet R13 from a Selmer Series 9 - it is amazing how different the
key placement is on those instruments! I will have to tell them
that the multiphonics and squeaks they heard periodically will
not be replicated at the concert :-)
