Jay,

I very much enjoyed reading about your musical background and how you
taught yourself. I would hope that those who are teaching themselves
will take to heart your suggestion to get a good teacher.

While many who have responded to this thread state that they know, or
have a feeling, that they are missing some things by not taking lessons,
I would suggest that they only have the slightest hint of what they are
missing.

I have taught privately since I was sixteen years old. That was 42 years
ago! My experience has taught me most of the ways that self taught
people go wrong. I can anticipate the ways that students will do things,
how they will circumvent a problem and substitute a questionable
technique rather than find the solution to that particular problem.

The most painful part of teaching some of these players who have long
established bad habits is getting them back on track. To me, this is a
lot of wasted time, and represents taking one step forward and two back.

I whole wholeheartedly concur, GET A GOOD PRIVATE TEACHER! There just
isn't enough time to rediscover the wheel. Teachers are very interested
in passing on the art of clarinet playing, or sax, or flute, or
whatever.
