Actually, I fall into that category myself. Since I did not start playing
clarinet (or any wind instrument) until I was a senior in high school, I
had no opportunity to play first in my school career, unless you count
first (and only) bass clarinet in concert band in college. I still have
difficulty with rapid altissimo passages, since I had little experience
playing them early on. I currently play first chair alto sax in two
groups, and recently have been first chair SECOND clarinet in another. I
have no objections to playing first chair clarinet, and have on occasion,
but mostly in groups where the repertoire only CHALLENGED, but did not
overwhelm, my ability.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
