Subj: [kl] Improvisation in Mozart
Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000 07:54:10 -0500

I have the very great joy this week to be playing Mozart's Piano Concerto
No. 24 in C Minor, K. 491. Not on the piano - that would be a crime
against nature, not to mention Mozart!! For those who don't know, the
clarinet parts in this concerto are glorious. In fact, I want Dan to
petition the Mozart Gods to rename it the Concerto for Piano, Clarinets
and orchestra...but I digress...

Our pianist is a 21 year old player, Stewart Goodyear. He improvises his
own cadenzas very ably (although he got a little lost and ended up in the
19th century tonight!) and also improvises and embellishes in what seems
to me to be a very natural and musically appropriate way in the recap of
some of the material in each movement. It is true improvisation -
different in each performance when we get to the recapped material. The
playing is a joy to hear.
