My earliest conscious memory of anyone playing a clarinet goes back to when
my Mother took me to see "Noddy in Toyland" at the Stoll theatre in London.
I can't remember how old I was, but I think I was too old for that show, and
I spent a lot of time watching the pit orchestra. I clearly remember being
fascinated by a clarinet player who spent most of the time reading a book,
and when the time came for him to play he would put down the book at the
very last moment and pick up his instrument in one smooth, practised
movement. Such Insouciance! Oh, how I admired him.

Perhaps not a very musical inspiration for taking up the clarinet, however
:-)

Also I got the idea, which I've never completely shaken off, that a
professional is someone who can do the job while thinking about something
else ...
