I'm a pianist and composer. I played a variety of instruments in school
bands. Also had studied oboe for a few years. I wanted to take some
clarinet lessons just to get a better idea of how to write for
clarinet, i.e. were there problem notes, difficult transitions to avoid,
difficult trills. I had bought a wooden student clarinet a long time
before with this in mind. Ten years of lessons later and now playing a
Buffet Prestige, I'm still going at it. Why? Not because of a
particular player I admire or wish to emulate, just for the wonderful
experience of making the kind of music that this instrument produces.
So, "why" for me was very much an accident finding an instrument that
was close to my heart.

Good luck with your experience. I've learned that doing something just
for the love of it doesn't need a reason.

P.S. I bought a bandoneon about six months ago for the same reason but
It just sits there as an inspiration, since I don't have any time to
spend on it.
