My observation is somewhat different, but evokes a "why?" nevertheless.
The community band with which I play has about 50 members. Some have been
in it for all 25 years of its history. Some members are professionals, but
the majority are amateurs. It's amazing how many of us drag in with bad
colds and other infirmities just so that we can play music together. Two
months ago one of our trumpeters was out bicycling. His front wheel
slipped on a pebble and he went down. One tooth went all the way through a
lip, so until the surgery mends, he arrives every Tuesday evening to play
percussion. One gets the distinct impression that many of the members
never were first chairs in any group -- that their interest in maintaining
an active musical life is little connected with their musical
accomplishment. Those of us who have kept up our instruments feel an
intimacy with it that is unshakable. Like Harold Hill admonished in "The
Music Man," "That trumpet is YOUR instrument, and never forget it!"

Dancers seem to have the same disorder. My parents were dancing fools,
going out maybe twice a week well into their 70s. They'd be delighted to
know that my daughter actually gets paid to do what they did for fun!
