I've always wondered how the orchestra that plays for the Academy Awards
can instantly start playing the right one of five possible pieces when a
winner is announced. I suppose they have parts that include just the
first few lines of each of the five pieces, but I think Tim's invention
would be even better for that purpose.
About Legere reeds: I got mine a month or so ago and I like it. My
teacher was unimpressed, saying it didn't have enough lows in the sound.
However, I played it for half of an orchestra concert recently, and a
clarinetist in the audience couldn't tell when I was using the Legere
vs. a cane reed. The Legere responds well to articulation, and I'm
just thrilled to know I have a backup reed that I can count on. My
mother just ordered a Legere from The Woodwind, and she was told they
are back-ordered with no estimated arrival date. The reeds must be
catching on.
About ligatures: Ken Wolman wrote a few months ago about using a
Consoli ligature on saxophone. I've been using one on my clarinet
recently, and I like it more than my Rovner Dark. I'm told they're =
even better on sax, but I haven't bought one for the sax yet.
About beer names: I've always liked the names that sound like
eructation, e.g. Schlitz, Pabst, and my favorite name: Blatz.
Liking the beers is a completely different question.
