Reeds tend to harden with age. But at the same time, they don't tend to
harden more than .75 of a strength or so, and their life span is
significantly increased. Fresh from the box (and sealed/flattened, of
course), a reed will last me about two months in rotation with three
others, with about 3 to 4 hours of playing a day. If I let the reeds age
for two years...well, I recently threw out a reed that had died after
being in service since November of 1998!
