I don't see the need for paper at all. In my imaginary "band of the future",
each player's stand has a flat, paper-white LCD display, about 11"x17". When
it's time to play the Second Suite, each player taps a couple of menus on the
page to bring up the list of parts, downloadable from the central "sheet
music server". The StandDisplay would remember which part you played last
time, and bring that up first.

Page turns could be handled by a single tap on the surface, or by a foot
switch, or even by automatic slow scrolling. You could make notes and other
notations using a stylus, with the advantage that they could be easily and
completely erased.

It would be a lot quicker to hand out new parts: just download them from the
central server. Wireless, of course. No more losing the parts. Of course,
those of us who like the smell of old paper would be disappointed.

All of this could be implemented with today's technology, although it would
be a bit spendy. Existing music could be photographically scanned; it
wouldn't have to be converted to a standard notation format, although that
would produce better results.

Now, if I just had some venture capital, and a cool domain name....
