Erin -

"EZO" is a brand name for denture cushions that are placed inside a person's
upper plate. (Fortunately, I can't speak from actual experience as I don't
have "china choppers".)

For use as lower lip protection for a single reed player, you just use the
material (waxed flannel) in the cushion to cut appropriate sized pieces to
fit over your front lower teeth. Only cover as much of the lower teeth as
you need to protect your lip. In folding the pad over your teeth I find it
best to keep the amount folded over to the back of your teeth to a small
amount to avoid its interfering with your tonguing. For comfort, keep the
front fold-over above the gum line. It takes a bit of experimentation. You
will find that the EZO material conforms quite well to your teeth and
maintains its shape when removed. Use your tongue to lift the back of the
pad and remove it with your fingers.

EZO's might work for upper teeth braces if you can cut a narrow strip and
press it firmly against the "hardware". If the braces have sufficient
"texture" for the wax and flannel to conform and stick to, EZO pads should
work. This would seem to be better that plain dental wax that doesn't have
the flannel to hold it together.

I get a number of day's use from each pad. I keep them clean by soaking
them in hydrogen peroxide along with my reeds after each use.

It's probably my imagination, but I believe that the pad over my lower teeth
actually strengthens my embouchure a little. It certainly doesn't seem to
harm my tone any.

Hope this helps.
