Can't argue with the Macquarie - but isn't "eiderdown with down filling"
tautological?!
I didn't have either OED or Macquarie with me but I did check "quilt" with an
inferior product called The Univeral English Dictionary (ed. HC Wyld, pub
Routledge & Kegan Paul Ltd, London) in which I think "cross stiching" was
intended to describe the overall pattern of the sewing, not the type of
stitch.
Either way, I guess doonas/duvets/eiderdowns would make pretty good acoustic
insulation.
