My first short stick was a Selmer Paris, which I saw advertised in the news
paper at a pawn shop. I was on sale for $200 in 1977. It was fun to play
as long as I didn't want to play in a group or with anyone else. When I
decided to join a band I bought an R-13, which was quite satisfactory until
1997, when I broke my leg and was flat on my back for several months. The
thing didn't get played and, consequently, when I started playing again I
noticed some checks (little cracks) on the bore. They caused intonation
problems. I had the horn worked on, hoping that would fix the problem. The
intonation was better but it was still not as responsive as I needed it to
be. I went to ClarinetFest 1998, where I played everything I could get my
hands on and was most impressed with the Hammerschmidt clarinets, but they
were out of my price range, so I looked more closely at the Patricolas,
which are very much like the Hammerschmidt ones. In January of 1999, I
bought a new Patricola after trying many more new little horns. If you
check the archives, you will see just how much I like it. If you want more
info on it, contact me by private e-mail and I will discuss it with you.

I had been playing on a Hite mouthpiece before I bought the latest horn. It
didn't work well with the new horn so, after many trials of other
mouthpieces, I bought a Greg Smith mouthpiece, which has been excellent.

On the Hite mouthpiece, I used #4 Vandoren (blue box) Eb reeds. On the Greg
Smith mouthpiece, I have been happiest with Vandoren White Master #3.5
reeds.

Both mouthpieces play well with Rovner ligatures, but I have been
experimenting with some metal ligatures, too. After some more time has
passed, I will let the list know how I like them. I hope this is helpful to
you.
