Thanks, Tony, for a Sherlockian explanation of Muehlfeld's switch from A to
Bb clarinet. This was a most interesting thread.

Tony Pay wrote,
>Brahms's piano had a different quality from the modern instrument, of
course. And I've certainly played the sonatas with pianists who don't make
the writing sound particularly thick -- though of course bad pianists do
create problems. >

My husband plays chamber music with several pianists, one of whom is a
banger. In the USA, a banger is not a sausage. It is a species of pianist
with fingers like sausages: thick, powerful fingers, peppery fingers, fingers
loaded with garlic, hot sauce and raw onions, and commanded by an equally
thick, powerful, blunt instrument of a brain. Brahms, with his deep
sonorities and his complex rhythms and textures, brings out the worst in this
type of pianist.

This particular megalomaniac, a bear of a man, insanely gleeful that Brahms
makes the pianist an equal partner and not a mere accompanist, may actually
reduce my poor piano to sawdust one day. He will do it while humming and
moaning, or singing in a falsetto (in no particular key) things like,
"Whoopsy, doopsy, dropped a little notesy, poor little notesy, wiggling on
the flooooooor...." But he can sight-read Brahms, and for this my husband
will forgive him anything.

This friendly fellow investigated my music rack once when I forgot to clear
it off before he arrived. Now that he knows what I've been working on, he
keeps asking when I will be ready to play the Brahms clarinet and piano
sonatas with him.

The honest answer: "When turtles fly."

The lying crock of mustard I give him: "I never can find enough time to
practice...."

Lelia
