Bravo, Tony. You've given us a valid reason for the change to Bb clarinet
and created an imaginary picture of Muehlfeld playing the slow movement.
Reviewing the Shackelton and Keith Puddy article on Muehlfeld's clarinets
(The Clarinet, May-June 1989) we note that Muehlfeld's Ottensteiner clarinets
had two very similar mouthpieces, and your idea that Muehlfeld probably
picked up the Bb instrument ready to play with another mouthpiece and reed on
it seems most likely. Now, with just four quarter beat rests to change, do
you suppose the quartet ever needed to wait for Muehlfeld a bit longer while
he changed instruments? Almost a built in vamp. Another point in the
article to note is that the Bb instrument's bore was .2mm larger, giving more
support to your idea that Muehlfeld was really pushing the sound at that
point. Thanks again...this was fun. Doug P.
