Yes, I've clearly conflated two reports in my mind. Obviously this is
the viola player. And certainly the phrase "a warm tone" and the
adjective "fiery" go against the notion that Muehlfeld's tone was at all
weak.

But I'm sure that there is a 'joke' comment from one listener. I
remember being very struck by it, perhaps even a bit shocked. But
perhaps, as David suggested, it was too loud for some, and *that* was
the joke. Charles Draper would, I think, have been the player
most providing the context for a contemporary British judgement.
