I thought I was the only one this crazy!

It is difficult to find pro alto clarinets to try. Even the major mail
order dealers may not have a stock. I decided to go with the new Buffet
model because it is the only alto clarinet that has been redesigned in
recent years. It has four resonance keys that really open the sound up in
the clarion register. It also includes two bocals and comes with a peg.
The only drawback to this instrument (aside from the price) is that it
does not have a double register key mechanism for the lowest clarion notes
which makes the long B stuffy.

This instrument is very expensive. It cost more than a Buffet low C bass
clarinet.

Something you can also find is the previous model Buffet alto clarinet.
When I ordered my newer model about 2 1/2 years, Weiner Music had four of
the older instruments they were trying to unload. At that point they
hadn't dropped the price much but if they still have them I would think
they would be very anxious to sell them. Try one first, however. I have
and there is a lot of difference.

Subject: [kl] alto clarinets
So, I am thinking of getting an alto clarinet, wood, professional level.

What are the characteristics of each brand? I want to consider Buffet,
LeBlanc, and Selmer (Yamaha is available too but I had a Yamaha bass
clarinet I wasn't crazy about).

I play an R13 Bb clarinet.

Thanks,

Jonathan Smith
