Jay,
I played Morgan mouthpieces (Bb, 10 and 6) for 7 years. I loved the
sound I could make with these mouthpieces and Vandoren Black Master
Reeds (on R13). But I was always sharp. We didn't blame the
mouthpiece. I worked hard on to bring it down. Then, after leaving
graduate school, I heard my teacher play and found out he had switched
from Morgans--b/c of a problem being sharp. And he no longer recommends
them to his students, for this reason.
I spoke with Morgan at the Columbus ClarinetFest. He seemed to think it
was my fault that I was sharp. Maybe it is something about how we play?
I'm not sure.
Last year, I purchased a mouthpiece from a colleague of my teacher's (in
Pittsburgh) and I love the sound I can make with it and it is much
easier for me to play in tune now.
Unfortunately, I don't know physically/scientifically what the
difference is between the mouthpieces. Maybe some people don't play
sharp on Morgans. I sure liked them otherwise.
